Figures, blind boxes and other molded items: a steel mold is built and trialled twice, and the decoration is piloted twice, before mass production.
Most of the time and the upfront cost of a figure goes into its steel mold. Once the mold is right, 10,000 pieces take about a week.
Each separate piece of your design, such as a head, body, arm, base or accessory, needs its own steel mold. A mold costs around US$5,000 per part.
The first test shots (T0) show where the mold needs correcting, and a second trial (T1) confirms it. Paint and print are then piloted twice on real parts. That testing is most of the roughly 5 months.
More separate parts, moving joints and fine details mean more molds and more paint steps. A one-piece design needs one mold (about US$5,000); a 6-part figure needs about US$30,000 of molds before the first piece is made.

Read the storyYes. Most projects start that way. Tell Takara what it is for, roughly how many you need and your budget, and you get product suggestions to choose from.
No. A sketch, a photo of something you like or your logo is enough. The 3D model is made for you, and you approve it before anything is produced.
It depends on the product: acrylic keychains start at 500 pcs, and blind-box figures, vinyl toys and injection-molded toys at 3,000. Every line lists its minimum in the catalogue above.
Price depends on size, material, finish and quantity. Molded products also have a one-time mold cost that is spread across your order, so the more you make, the lower the price per piece. Check the reference prices, or send your idea for a quote. See reference prices →
A brand-new molded figure takes about five months from 3D model to finished goods, mostly for making and testing the mold. Products that need no new mold, like acrylic keychains and standees, are much quicker.
