Your checklist in four steps

The same questions Takara asks at the inquiry stage.

1. What are you making?
2. Who is it for?
3. Where will you sell it?

Select every market you plan to sell in, so one test plan can cover all of them.

4. How will you sell it?

Indicative checklist of common requirements in each market, as of October 2026. It is not legal advice. Rules change, and the exact scope depends on your design, materials and buyer. The accredited lab confirms the final test plan, and Takara confirms it in your quote and contract.

02 · Before you order

Define compliance requirements at the start of the engagement

Certification and testing requirements shape factory selection, cost and lead time. They should be specified at the inquiry stage, and confirmed no later than contract signature.

01

Specify requirements at inquiry, confirm them in the contract

Required certifications, audits and test reports determine which partner factories are eligible, the testing scope, and the resulting cost and schedule. Requirements introduced after production has started may require re-sampling, additional testing or a change of facility.

02

Standards differ by country and by sales channel

Each destination market, and often each retailer or licensor, sets its own requirements. A product that complies in one market is not automatically compliant in another. Where goods will be distributed in several markets, all of them should be declared upfront so that testing covers every destination.

03

Higher-tier programs require meaningful order volumes

Programs such as Disney FAMA, amfori BSCI and Sedex SMETA are held by a limited number of qualified facilities, which carry higher overheads and plan capacity for larger runs. They are generally practical for orders of relatively large quantity. For smaller runs, Takara recommends the appropriate level of assurance, typically product-safety testing to the destination market’s standard.

03 · FAQ

Common questions

Who holds the test reports and certificates?

Tests are carried out by accredited third-party labs, and factory audits are held by the partner factory that produces your goods. Takara itself holds no certifications: it plans the testing, selects eligible partner factories and manages the lab work for you.

How much does testing add to cost and timeline?

It depends on the product, its materials and how many markets you sell in. Declaring every market at the inquiry stage lets one test plan cover them all, which is usually cheaper and faster than testing again later.

Do I need FAMA, BSCI or SMETA?

Only if your licensor or retailer asks for them. These programs are held by a limited number of facilities and are generally practical for relatively large orders. For smaller runs, product-safety testing to the destination market’s standard is usually the right level of assurance.

Is this checklist final?

No. It is a planning tool. The exact scope depends on your design, materials, age grading and buyer, so the accredited lab confirms the final test plan, and Takara confirms it in your quote and contract.
