# Custom Merchandise MOQ Master Guide 2026: Production Economics, Minimums & Destination Markets

Custom Merchandise MOQ Master Guide 2026: Minimum Order Quantities by Product and Destination Market

**Key takeaways**

- **Two minimums for custom plush:** 500 pcs per design for Vietnam and 1,000 pcs per design for export, to any market.
- **Per design, not per order:** each custom design is sampled and tested on its own, so the minimum applies to every design.
- **Mix to reach the minimum:** ready-made catalogue orders start at 500 pcs in total, and a single design can be as few as 100 to 200 pcs within that order.
- **Molds set their own floor:** figures and blind boxes start at 3,000 pcs because a mold is built first.

Takara's minimum order for custom plush is 500 pieces per design for Vietnam and 1,000 pieces per design for export. Ready-made catalogue orders start at 500 pieces in total, mixed across designs, and molded figures or blind boxes at 3,000 pieces.

A minimum order quantity is not an arbitrary number a supplier picks. It is the run size at which the fixed costs of one design, mainly sampling, lab testing and, for molded goods, tooling, stop dominating the price of each piece. This guide sets out the minimums Takara applies in 2026 and the reason behind each one, so you can plan a range before you ask for a quote.

## 1. Why export has a higher minimum

Every destination market sets its own safety requirements, and each design has to be tested against them. That test is a fixed cost per design: it is the same whether you make 500 pieces or 5,000. Export designs carry a full test program for the destination market, so they need a larger run before that cost per piece is reasonable. This is why the same plush has a minimum of 500 for a Vietnamese corporate gift and 1,000 for export.

Corporate gifts given away in Vietnam, and not sold, need no conformity certificate, only a full VAT invoice. Retail sale in Vietnam needs QCVN 3 testing and the CR mark. Export markets need their own standards, described in the [toy safety compliance matrix](https://takarahq.com/insights-toy-safety-compliance-matrix) .

## 2. Custom plush: minimum per design

| Where the plush will be sold | Minimum per design | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Vietnam: corporate gifts and Vietnamese retail | 500 pcs | Gifts that are not sold need only a VAT invoice; retail needs QCVN 3 testing and the CR mark. |
| Export, any destination market | 1,000 pcs | Lab testing to the destination's toy-safety standard, for example EN 71 with CE marking for the EU, or ASTM F963 and CPSIA for the United States. |

If the same design will be sold in several markets, declare all of them at inquiry so testing is planned to cover every destination.

## 3. Minimums by product line

| Product | Minimum | Counted |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Custom plush and soft goods | 500 pcs for Vietnam, 1,000 pcs for export | Per design |
| Ready-made catalogue plush | 500 pcs per order in total; a design from 100 pcs (standard label and your hangtag); your own woven label from 500 pcs | Per order, designs mixed |
| Molded items: PVC or vinyl figures, figure blind boxes, injection-molded toys | 3,000 pcs | Per design (a mold is built first) |
| Acrylic keychains | 500 pcs | Per design |
| Cultural festival gift sets | 300 sets | Per order |
| Canvas and tote bags | 300 pcs | Per design |
| Executive and onboarding gift sets | 100 sets | Per order |

## 4. Labels and branding by quantity

On ready-made catalogue plush, a design ordered in a quantity under 500 pieces keeps the pattern's standard sewn-in label, and the paper hangtag carries your brand. From 500 pieces, the product can carry your own woven label or an embroidered logo. On custom plush, which already starts at 500 pieces per design, your own labels are part of the specification from the start.

## 5. How quantity changes the schedule

The first sample of a soft-goods design takes 7 to 10 working days after the sample fee is paid and the artwork is final. Mass production starts after the sample is approved and the deposit is received, and never takes less than 30 days. Larger totals across all designs take longer:

| Total pieces (all designs) | Soft-goods mass production |
| --- | --- |
| Up to 1,000 | About 30 days |
| 1,001 to 3,000 | About 35 days |
| 3,001 to 10,000 | About 45 days |
| Above 10,000 | About 60 days |

Molded figures follow a different route: a 3D model, mold making, two mold trials and two decoration pilots come before mass production, which then runs at about 7 days per 10,000 pieces. Shipping time is added on top of either schedule. The [production planner](https://takarahq.com/personalize) builds a dated schedule for a specific order.

## 6. When your quantity is below the minimum

- **Start from the ready-made catalogue:** an order of 500 pieces can be split across several designs, from 100 pieces each, with your hangtag.
- **Launch fewer designs:** concentrate the volume on the designs that matter most and add the rest in a second run.
- **Start in Vietnam:** a first run for the Vietnamese market has a minimum of 500 pieces per design instead of 1,000 for export.
- **For tees, hoodies and totes, keep your own blanks:** with [Koko by Takara](https://koko.takarahq.com/) , the first blank batch starts at 500 pieces and is stored free at Takara's warehouse; each new design then prints in runs from 100 pieces, delivered in about 10 days.
- **Simplify the design:** fewer pieces, fewer colors and materials already on the market keep fixed costs low; for molded goods, fewer separate parts mean fewer molds. See the [design for manufacturing guide](https://takarahq.com/insights-design-for-manufacturing) .

## Methodology

The figures are the minimums Takara applies in October 2026. The same rules drive the production planner on takarahq.com. They are produced through Takara's vetted partner factories and confirmed for each order in the quotation; a specific product, material or packaging can change them.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the minimum order for custom plush?**

It is set per design: 500 pcs for Vietnam (corporate gifts and Vietnamese retail) and 1,000 pcs for export, whatever the destination market.

**Why is the export minimum higher than for Vietnam?**

Testing is a fixed cost per design. Export toys need lab testing to the destination market's standard, for example EN 71 for the EU or ASTM F963 and CPSIA for the United States, so a design needs a larger run before the testing cost per piece is reasonable.

**Is MOQ counted per order or per design?**

For custom products it is per design, because each design is sampled and tested on its own. Ready-made catalogue patterns are counted per order and designs can be mixed.

**Can I order fewer than 500 plush?**

Not as a whole order: ready-made catalogue orders start at 500 pcs in total. Within that total you can mix designs, and a design can be as few as 100 to 200 pcs; those keep the standard sewn-in label with your own paper hangtag. Your own woven label or embroidered logo starts at 500 pcs.

**What is the minimum for blind boxes and figures?**

3,000 pcs for molded items such as PVC or vinyl figures, figure blind boxes and injection-molded toys, because a mold has to be built first.
